ABSOLUTE CHROMA

I spent the early days of my childhood sitting behind a LCD screen as I browsed the internet, often alone in the dark while I waited for my parents to return from their weekend outings. Absolute Chroma is a manifestation of my dissatisfaction of solitude and the desperation of finding purpose in my life. My photographs are meant to bring out deep rooted emotions, from the perspective of someone who may spend their time alone. Humans are generally social beings and society may get wrapped up in social interactions that they may not take the time to appreciate the beauty of vacant spaces.

I have a deep appreciation for neon lights and urban landscape photography. I wanted to build a landscape that felt somber and mysterious, while also intriguing and astonishing. I am heavily inspired by cyberpunk cities and one of my biggest inspirations comes from Akira, a manga written by Katsuhiro Otomo. In his illustrations, he portrays Neo-Tokyo as a very futuristic city torn by war. I took inspiration by attempting capture a dystopian city that never sleeps. By shooting at night, I am really able to capture the grittiness of these alleyways and structures.

I chose Denver as my prime location because I wanted to shoot in an urban area.  In recent years, Denver has been growing exponentially in population, and thousands of people crowd the downtown area each day. My biggest challenge was to be able to get the shots I needed without too much interference from pedestrians, so I spent 3 Sunday evenings to accomplish this. I mainly spent my time around Union Station and Coors Field because there were many areas that had neon lights at night.

Originally, I wanted to explore landscape, but I took it a step further and decided to photograph objects to explore a sense of intimacy. I still wanted to continue my exploration with neon lights, which led me to Round 1, an arcade located in Littleton, Colorado. I challenged myself by limiting myself to only one subject of focus. This allowed me to take interesting shots that otherwise would go unnoticed due to the overwhelming lights and sounds an arcade makes.

S l i p

S L I P  is a dance visual film featuring contemporary choreography, projection design, and a theme focusing on self-image. The project portrays an introspective representation of the struggles of young adult women in how they view themselves in relation to those around them, as well as influencers on social media.

The theme of S L I P is self-image and how big of a role it plays in the lives of young adults today. With the increase in the daily use of technology, and subsequently social media, young adults are focusing more than ever on how they look and how they are perceived by others. Especially for women, unrealistic expectations are set through social media influencers and cultural normalcies. The failure to meet these unrealistic expectations results in self-confidence issues, anxiety, and depression. This leads young adults to completely change who they are so that they can fit in better with the people around them. S L I P takes an introspective look at how this problem can greatly affect two individuals.
